Practical Test Guide

After you’ve been learning to ride a motorcycle for a while and successfully passed your theory test, you’ll soon want to apply for your practical test. There are two modules you must take for your practical test, but don’t let this throw you off – the test is only there so you can prove to your examiner that you can ride a motorcycle safety and correctly as well as sufficient riding knowledge. We understand that the thought of taking a test can be quite daunting so we’ve put together a little something for those who are looking to book their test sometime soon…

Booking your test

Before booking your practical test, you must make sure that you’ve passed your motorcycle theory test and that you have the certificate to prove this. Once this is done, you can then go ahead and book you practical motorcycle test if you believe you are ready. Don’t worry if you’re not ready straight away – learning to ride is a long process and you must never rush in order to pass your test right away. Besides, if you rush your training, you’re bound to miss a few things along the way and possibly fail the test, which is also quite costly.

Once you’ve booked your practical test, it’s a good idea to get to grips with what will be asked of you. This guide should help you to understand the practical test a little bit more and how the test will be divided. The first module is the off-road manoeuvres test. The second module is the on-road test.

Please note that you must pass module one before you apply for module two.

Module One – Off-road manoeuvres

For this module you will be asked to:

  • Carry out a slow driving exercise. During this exercise, the examiner will ride alongside you in order to inspect you driving ability.
  • Perform a slalom and figure of eight exercise where will you ride around cones.
  • Complete a U-turn.
  • Perform an emergency stop. You speed should be riding at 50kph minimum.
  • Wheel the motorcycle (or moped) and use the stand.
  • Ride around a corner followed by a controlled stop.
  • Ride around a corner with a combined hazard avoidance.

This module will last around 20-30 minutes. Once you’ve finished the module, the examiner will inform you of the result. You must wait three days before booking your module two if you fail module one.

Module Two – On-road riding

Before you take this module, your examiner will check over your license and inform you that the test will take around 40 minutes.

For this module, you will be asked to:

  • Take an eyesight test. All you need to do here is to read a number plate out to the examiner to prove that you meet the eyesight requirements.
  • Answer two safety and balance questions about the motorcycle or moped. These will be two random questions, so get your instructor or trainer to run through the possible questions that the examiner may ask you.
  • The examiner will give you an earpiece and radio before explaining how they work.
  • Carry out a series of hill starts, stops and angle starts
  • Perform ten minutes of independent riding

Once you’ve finished the module, the examiner will inform you of the result.

Good luck!
