Summer Riding Tips

As the temperature rises, it’s time to make the most of those beautiful summer days and head out on your bike. Make the most of your time in the sun with our guide to safe summer riding.

  • Riding in the summer can get hot and uncomfortable, especially if you’re stuck in traffic. However hot it is you should never ride without full protective equipment; even a minor accident wearing only shorts and t shirt could cause serious injury. There is now a wide variety of summer motorcycle clothing, which helps keep you cool on the road.
  • The hot temperatures mean your body will dehydrate quickly, so make sure you carry plenty of water, and if you’re heading out for a long ride be sure to take some rest breaks.
  • Watch out for summer hazards on the roads. In extreme heat you may find there are areas where the road surface has become slippery which can be a real danger on two wheels.
  • The summer also brings pedestrians and cyclists out in force so make sure you are always aware of other road users.
  • Beware of rain showers after a string of dry days as this can often result in hazardous slicks of oil and residue on the road’s surface.
  • When riding in bright sunshine be aware of other road users reduced visibility – they may be blinded by glare from the sun and not see you until it’s too late.

If you’re just getting into biking then these long nights and warm days are a great time to learn. Check out Metropolis Motorcycle’s Training School for more info on motorcycle training in London.
