Theory Test Guide
Before taking the Practical Motorcycle/Scooter Test, you must first complete and pass a theory test.
The Theory Test assesses your knowledge of the rules of the road, your hazard perception skills and other know how associated with riding a motorcycle; this is for your own safety before hitting the roads legally. The theory test consists of two parts – a series of multiple choice questions and a hazard perception section. In order to pass the theory test you must pass both sections. If you pass one section but fail another you will have to take the whole test again. Please note that you must have a provisional motorcycle licence to book your motorcycle theory test.
About the theory
- After you arrive, you will be escorted into the test room where you will be presented with a series of multiple choice questions on a computer. Don’t worry if you don’t understand; you have opportunity to go through a practice session before the actual test begins.
- The multiple choice section involves the use of a touch screen computer and the hazard perception section uses a computer mouse.
- There are 50 questions in this section, of which you must answer 43 correct to pass.
- Be sure to read each question carefully as some multiple choice questions will only require you to pick one answer and others may require multiple answers.
- You have 57 minutes to complete the multiple choice question section. After you have completed this section you may take a three minute break.
- Afterwards, you will then move onto the hazard perception part of the test. First you will be shown a short video which explains how to answer the questions.
- When the test begins you will watch a series of video clips which show everyday road scenarios. Each clip will feature at least one developing hazard, and one of the clips will feature two hazards.
- The pass mark for the motorcycle hazard perception test is 44 out of 75.
- When you leave the test room, you will be presented with an envelope containing your test result – this determines whether you’ve passed or not!
Quick Tips on passing your Theory Test
- Purchase a Theory Test Guide. They’re only cheap and this will help you to get to grips with everything that may crop up in the theory. We advise buying the DSA’s Official DSA Theory Test for Motorcyclists which will contain everything you’ll need to know.
- Borrow a Theory Test DVD. Most DVD’s feature the two sections of the real life Theory Test, so it really is a great way to get things drilled into your head. Perhaps your instructor has one they can lend you?
- Don’t book your theory test unless you know you’re ready to take it – this is where a lot of money could get wasted.
- Don’t be nervous – it isn’t the end of the world if you fail the test, you just need to concentrate and make sure you understand each question fully.
When you pass, you can then take your Practical Test. If you’re looking for Motorcycle Training or Scooter Training then Metropolis can help you out. Learn in a clean and customer friendly environment with enthusiastic and experienced instructors, from CBT to full licence courses. Train on Piaggio scooters or Honda motorcycles. The choice is yours!
