If you’re in the market for a motorbike but can’t afford the model you want new then consider buying a used bike. Buying second hand means your money will stretch a lot further. However if you don’t do your research you could get burnt! Read our handy guide to make sure you protect yourself when buying a used bike.
There are two options when buying a used bike – either buy from a dealer or buy from a private owner. Buying from a dealer is often the better option, especially if you don’t have an extensive knowledge of bikes. A motorcycle dealer will be able to answer any questions you may have and can often include warranty with the bike. Buying from a private seller can mean you get a better price but you need to be sure you aren’t buying a dud.
Regardless of where you choose to buy your bike you should always perform a thorough inspection before committing to buy. If you buy a bike without first checking the mechanical condition you may only find out about the problems when it’s too late! Perform an initial visual check and then test all controls and components. If you don’t have an in-depth knowledge of motorcycles either take a savvy friend with you or ask a mechanic to look it over before you commit yourself.
You should also look for evidence that the bike has been involved in an accident, such as damage or scrapes on the bodywork. For this reason you should always view a potential purchase in the daylight as small scratches could be missed in poor or artificial lighting.
If you are happy with the condition of the bike ask to take it for a test ride. Not only will this highlight any unseen mechanical issues, it will also allow you to check the fit and feel of the bike. At this stage you should check the steering, gear changing, clutch, brakes and throttle.
Once satisfied that the bike is safe to ride and mechanically sound you should turn your attention to the documentation. As a minimum the seller should have the bike’s log book (V5) and an MOT certificate (if the bike is 3 years old or more). If the seller doesn’t have these documents walk away. Without the log book there is no proof of ownership – if the bike turns out to be stolen you would be left with nothing!
Ensure the log book is original by checking the watermark is visible. You should also check the engine numbers match those on the frame. Finally check that the name and address are that of the current owner.
To be sure that no finance is owed on the bike and to get more information on its history, it is a good idea to run a HPI check.
Remember there are plenty of used bikes out there! If you’re not sure this is the bike for you then carries on looking. Never buy a bike which you suspect may be stolen or been in an accident. If in doubt walk away!
