If you are just getting into Motorcycling then a bike shop can seem like a very confusing place. There is little doubt that you will be full of enthusiasm about joining the biking fraternity but it can help to have a full understanding of the biking world before you start spending money.
One of the questions frequently asked is about the main types or styles of bikes available to the beginner. We run through the main segments below for you:
1. Sports Bikes – The obvious first choice for the beginner as their styling and performance is often the reason that many of us get into biking in the first place. Our advice is to think carefully before going for a super quick bike straight away because of insurance costs and the dangers of riding one without a huge amount of experience.
2. Scooters – Scooters are an obvious choice for the beginner as they are cheap to run and buy and modern styling means they are now as much of a fashion accessory as any other bike. Top brands aside from the obvious main bike manufacturers include Piaggio and Lambretta.
3. Naked Bikes – These are bikes styles without much fairing, leaving the engine and much of the frame on show. The styling tends to lean towards retro more and they are seen as being quite muscular looking motorcycles.
4. Cruisers – Think of cruisers and you immediately think of Harley Davison, although nowadays there are many more brands involved. Everyone from Honda and Suzuki to BMW and Kawasaki now do cruisers, but their size and power means they are not really suited to beginner motorcycle riders.
Other styles include adventure sport bikes, such as the bikes seen on many of the round the world adventure programs, and tourers, which are basically cruisers but made to eat up motorway miles more than to turn heads.
