Correctly assessing the appropriate speed for a piece of road is one of the most important skills for motorcyclists. In many cases, travelling at an inappropriate speed can be fatal.
According to some figures released by RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents), in 2009 excessive speed was a contributing factor in 16% of fatal accidents on the UK roads. The figures also suggest that two thirds of these accidents occurred in areas which were restricted to 30mph.
These figures show that despite the efforts of the Police, ROSPA and various government departments, drivers and motorcyclists are still ignoring speed limits and driving too fast.
So how do you know if you are going too fast, and what can you do about it? Well, in built up areas with enforced speed limits it is simply a case of paying more attention to your speedometer. Why not get into the habit of dropping an extra gear each time you hit a 30mph zone to help you slow down?
On country roads where you can ride at the national speed limit, your judgement is your most valuable tool. When it comes to assessing the appropriate speed for a corner, experience counts.
If you are in any doubt, why not go on an advanced motorcycle training course. These courses are designed for experienced riders and are geared towards building risk awareness and an increased ability to manage those risks. They are great courses which will benefit any rider, of any ability.
Speed is one of the biggest killers on the UK roads. Make sure you give it the appropriate respect and attention.
