Practical Test Guide

A new motorcycle practical test was introduced in April 2009, to help improve the safety of motorcycle and moped riders. The guide below gives information on the new test.

What does the practical test include?

The practical motorcycle test is now split into two modules.

Module 1 is made up of mandatory manoeuvres which must be carried out at specific speeds. This module is tested in a safe off road environment.

The mandatory manoeuvres are:

  • at least two manoeuvres slow speed, including a slalom
  • at least two manoeuvres at higher speed, of which one exercise should be in second or third gear, at a speed of at least 30 km/h (approx. 19 mph) and one exercise avoiding an obstacle at a minimum speed of 50 km/h (approx. 32 mph)
  • at least two braking manoeuvres, including an emergency brake at a minimum speed of 50 km/h (approx. 32 mph)
  • You will also be required to demonstrate your riding ability on either the left-hand or right-hand circuit. The standard off-road layout can be viewed on the Driving Standards Agency website:

If you pass module 1 you will be given a certificate which you must bring with you to your Module 2 test. If you do not pass Module 1 you will not be allowed to progress to Module 2.

Module 2 of the practical test comprises an eyesight test, various road safety questions and at least 30 minutes of road riding. During the road riding section you will have to demonstrate your skills in a variety of road and traffic conditions. This section will also include normal stops, hill starts and angle starts.

What do I need to bring?

Remember to bring following items with you:

  • provisional licence and paper counterpart
  • valid DL196
  • valid theory test certificate
  • valid module 1 test pass certificate (when presenting for module 2 only

Hey I just wanted to let you know, I really like the written material on your site. But I am utilising Firefox on a machine running version 9.10 of Xubuntu and the look and feel aren’t quite proper. Not a big deal, I can still essentially read the articles and explore for info, but just wanted to inform you about that. The navigation bar is kind of challenging to use with the config I’m running. Keep up the good work!
